Bold, timely uncertainty surrounds Imran Khan’s next move amid ongoing deal speculation.
- He has been denied meetings with family and lawyers.
- PTI remains unsure what tone he would take if he were allowed to speak again.
- Past messages relayed by visitors have led to new restrictions.
ISLAMABAD: A degree of relief from the apex court and Khan’s recent silence has intensified political chatter about whether a deal or a loosening of his legal and political restrictions could be in the offing.
Nonetheless, this correspondent cannot confirm any such development. On Khan’s health, the government and other stakeholders say they are ready to provide treatment, as the Attorney General assured the Supreme Court.
Khan, who remains jailed amid multiple cases, has not issued public messages in months as he’s been barred from meeting family, party leaders, and lawyers.
Even within the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), there is doubt about how Khan might respond if family or broader communications were restored.
A PTI leader, speaking anonymously, acknowledged that predicting Khan’s next move has never been easy. “He has always acted according to what he believes is principled,” noted one senior PTI figure, “but no one can say with certainty what tone he would adopt if allowed to speak again.”
Historically, Khan used lawyer and family visits to relay political signals, which then surfaced publicly through media appearances or posts on X (formerly Twitter). His pointed statements toward senior military leadership previously prompted the ban on family, party leaders, and even lawyers visiting him in Adiala Jail.
The prospect of Khan once more issuing strong criticism—through his sisters or party figures if visits resume—has raised concerns across multiple quarters. At the same time, some PTI insiders privately hope this moment signals a more measured approach.
There are reports that Bushra Bibi, Khan’s wife, has recently met with certain relatives, though a facilitator described these meetings as tightly regulated. People familiar with the matter say those relatives were instructed to avoid political discussion during visits and to refrain from speaking to the media afterward.
If family and party meetings were permitted again, it is expected that similar conditions would apply to Khan, but the question remains whether he would accept them.
Any meaningful relaxation for Imran Khan, observers believe, hinges on a baseline of trust in his words. Yet deep mistrust persists and Khan’s unpredictability continues to complicate any consensus.
Khan’s unclear path has already strained the PTI’s organizational cohesion, intensified internal rifts, and tested the party’s resilience over the past few years. While many leaders push for de-escalation to preserve space for political activity, Khan remains the principal obstacle. Will his stance shift now? No one can say for sure.
