In a deeply alarming development, Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Savannah Guthrie, a well-known host on NBC's Today show, has reportedly been taken from her home in what many believe to be an abduction. This unsettling incident occurred at her residence in the upscale Catalina Foothills area near Tucson, Arizona, on Saturday evening around 9:45 PM local time.
Sheriff Chris Nanos of Pima County has confirmed that a significant manhunt is currently in progress, stating, "I believe she was abducted," during an interview with CBS News. The alarm was raised by her family the next day when Mrs. Guthrie did not attend church, prompting authorities to treat her $1 million property as a crime scene as they work tirelessly to find her.
It's particularly concerning as Nancy Guthrie requires medication that is critical for her health; without it, she could face life-threatening complications within 24 hours. Despite her physical limitations, which prevent her from walking more than 50 yards alone, her mental acuity remains intact, ruling out dementia as a factor in her disappearance. Last year, Savannah publicly honored her mother on Instagram for Mother's Day, describing her as "God's first, best and most important gift to me."
Sheriff Nanos expressed his disbelief over the circumstances, noting, "I can't think of the last time where in the middle of the night in someone's bed, an 84-year-old woman disappeared on us." Authorities have recovered her mobile phone, wallet, and car, indicating that she left her belongings behind in a rush.
To aid in the search, helicopters equipped with infrared technology and drones are surveying the surrounding landscape. In addition, teams of volunteers have joined the efforts alongside Customs and Border Patrol officers, who are stationed about 75 miles away from the Mexican border. These officers have provided search-and-rescue dogs to enhance the search operation.
Sheriff Nanos has also asked local residents in the Catalina Foothills area to review their security camera footage or doorbell videos for any clues that may assist in the investigation. "It's a very safe neighborhood. This is highly unusual, and we are very concerned about her," said neighbor Jeff Lamie, reflecting the community's shock over this incident.
Savannah Guthrie, who has been a prominent figure on NBC's flagship morning program since 2012, was notably absent from the show on Monday. She expressed her gratitude to her followers for their support, prayers, and messages, saying, "Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom. We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff's office."
This situation raises numerous questions about safety in seemingly secure neighborhoods and the vulnerability of elderly individuals. As the investigation unfolds, many are left wondering: how can such events occur in areas deemed safe? What measures can communities implement to prevent similar situations?
