Bold headline: Anna Murdoch-Mann, Rupert Murdoch’s former wife and longtime News Corp director, dies at 81.
Anna Murdoch-Mann, who was once married to media magnate Rupert Murdoch and served on News Corp’s board, has died at the age of 81. The New York Post, one of News Corp’s outlets, reported that she passed away on February 17, surrounded by family at her home in Florida. The cause of death was not disclosed.
Born Anna Torv in Glasgow, Scotland, on June 30, 1944, she moved to Australia with her family as a child. She began a journalism career at 18, contributing to the now-defunct Daily Mirror and to the Daily Telegraph before meeting Murdoch. The couple wed in 1967, and during their marriage she reportedly played a significant role in News Corp’s growth across Australia and beyond, later serving on the company’s board.
Anna and Rupert Murdoch had three children: Elisabeth, Lachlan, and James. Lachlan Murdoch is currently the Chairman of News Corp. Their marriage ended in 1997 after Murdoch’s affair with Wendi Deng; reports indicated she received a settlement worth about $1.7 billion.
After the split, Murdoch-Mann said she was pressured off the News Corp board and described her ex-husband as determined to pursue the divorce. Murdoch went on to marry William Mann six months after the separation; the couple remained together until William Mann’s death in 2017. She later married Ashton dePeyster in 2019.
