AirAsia X Denies Grounding Reports, Calls Media Claims a 'Smear Campaign' (2026)

AirAsia X has recently refuted media reports suggesting that its Philippines operations have been grounded, emphasizing that all flights remain operational and scheduled as usual. This denial comes amidst claims that AirAsia owes the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) a substantial amount in various charges, including air navigation, landing, parking, and passenger service fees, accumulated from 2021 to May 2026. The total amount owed is reportedly around PHP271.94 million (RM17.7 million).

AirAsia Group co-founder and advisor, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, expressed the airline's commitment to affordable travel and its opposition to any actions that could harm consumers or limit air connectivity. He highlighted AirAsia's significant role in making air travel accessible to millions of Filipinos, particularly those who might not have otherwise had the opportunity to fly. Fernandes also underscored the airline's investment in airport infrastructure development in the Philippines, such as the Ninoy Aquino International Airport and Mactan-Cebu International Airport, which are expected to enhance connectivity, operational efficiency, and cost reduction.

The airline views the coordinated media reports as a deliberate smear campaign aimed at undermining fair competition in the Philippine aviation sector. According to AirAsia, these reports serve the interests of entities seeking to limit consumer choice and potentially create a monopoly. Despite the controversy, AirAsia X assures that it remains dedicated to serving the public, supporting tourism, and ensuring safe, affordable, and reliable air travel for Filipinos.

This situation raises questions about the balance between regulatory compliance and the maintenance of competitive market dynamics. It also underscores the importance of accurate and responsible reporting in the media, especially when it comes to businesses that play a crucial role in connecting people and promoting economic growth.
